Various Types of Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers Available

A heat exchanger is an equipment used to transfer the heat between two different fluids. They are used in both the heating and cooling processes. Likewise, the Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger is also one of the most widely used heat exchangers. These are made using two different tubes which are placed firmly in a shell; the flowing pattern of the liquid in these can be in many configurations. These heat exchangers are designed in such a way that one fluid passes through the shell and the other one through the tube.

You must be wondering about how these heat exchangers are divided. If yes, then here are the different types of the shell and tube heat exchangers which one can opt for.

Co-current Flow Heat Exchangers

In this heat exchanger, the cold and hot fluid flows in a similar direction.
The disparity in the temperature of the hot and cold fluid tends to decrease gradually. The temperature transition happens from one end to the other.

Recuperators

Recuperators are one of the types of shell and tube heat exchangers that are used mostly. The evaporators used in the ice plants and automobiles are the common examples of this one.

Direct Contact Heat Exchangers

These are those types, in which the cold and hot fluids are in direct contact. There is no barrier present between them which makes it possible for the fluids to get mixed with each other. The mass and heat transfer takes place simultaneously.

Regenerative Heat Exchangers

This form of a heat exchanger is very common. The heat coming from a hot surface is retained in the regenerative heat exchanger, and then the same heat is removed.

The hot surface is pushed in and out of the hot and cold fluid streams, alternately. The hot and cold currents are transferred periodically in or out of the hot surface.
